Dean Street: Excitement just steps from your Albury Hotel
Coming to Albury for a vacation? Then it’s a safe bet that at some point you’ll find yourself on Dean Street, the No. 1 shopping and entertainment strip in the city. With more than 34 restaurants, stores ranging from large shopping malls to quaint one-of-a-kind shops and a mix of pubs, bars and nightclubs, Dean Street is the center of Albury action and staying at an Albury hotel can put it all at your doorstep.
When making an albury accommodation, Dean Street will probably figure prominently, and with good reason. Dean Street plays a major role in Albury life, and has done so throughout its history. Currently boasting more than 600 businesses, the street is home to three buildings that have played a major role in the history and development of Albury.
The massive Post Office, built in 1875, is considered the gateway to Dean Street. The building features an open veranda that replaces a covered one located on Kiewa Street. A clock tower, built of wood disguised to resemble bricks, was added in the 1920s.
The Old Courthouse, built in 1860, is registered with the National Trust and still retains some of its original qualities, including a dock with iron railing, a wooden press galley where the journalists of the day traditionally etched their names into the wood and a large coat of arms painted on the wall above the judge’s bench.
The old Town Hall, which now houses the Regional Art Gallery, was designed by local artists in 1980 as an expression of Albury civic pride. Built in the Federation Free Classic Style, its opening marked a turning point in Albury’s history as the city became the focal point of new settlement in the region. In 2008, the old Town Hall celebrated its 100th birthday.
For visitors who use a more present-day Albury accommodation, Dean Street is a tree-lined thoroughfare that makes the most of warm temperatures with many al fresco dining establishments offering meals at any time of the day and cooking styles that can take you around the world. Restaurants range from casual dining to upscale gourmet establishments that are perfect for that special occasion.
Pub life on Dean Street offers an equal variety of options, as visitors can choose from quiet English-style pubs for a casual night on the town to places where the DJ spins music all night long and the dancing is non-stop. Prefer your music live? When you book an Albury accommodation, Dean Street becomes the place to be for live music from rock to pop to swing to country.
In addition, Dean Street features a number of sports pubs where you can keep up with your favorite local team, test your brains at a trivia contest or maybe even catch the next up-and-coming comedian.
Shopping fans will find no shortage of retailers on Dean Street, ranging from clothing stores to jewelers, electronics stores to exotic goods. Stroll through the convenience of a local shopping mall or find the unique gift item in a one-of-a-kind shop. It’s all on Dean Street.
When you book an Albury accommodation, Dean Street becomes your one-stop destination for dining, entertainment, shopping and fun.
